AbstractOne of the most important tests for characterization of organic wastes is the 5-day, 20°C, BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) test, 20°C being a median value of summer temperature for natural bodies of water in many temperate countries. This test is widely used all over the world for comparative purposes. A reasonable average ambient temperature in Southeast Asia is 30° C. The present research was aimed at studying the progression of 30°C BOD for natural waters and waste waters and its relationship to that at 20°C. The 30°C BOD progression conformed closely in shape to that at 20°C, and 3-day, 30°C, BOD values were found to be in reasonable agreement with 5-day, 20°C BOD values. Also, nitrification was not found to be a problem in 3 days at 30 C for river waters, klong(canal) waters, and sewages. A 3-day, 30°C, BOD test is recommended for use in countries with a climate similar to that in Southeast Asia. Respirometry studies at 30 C were carried out to follow in detail the progress of oxygen uptake for sewages and pure organic compounds. The reaction was found to progress at a much higher rate than in the BOD bottle, and a plateau in the exertion of oxygen demand was also observed. Dark-bottle BOD progressions, obtained by incubating samples in the water of a klong, indicated that the reaction proceeded at a slightly higher rate than in laboratory BOD studies.
