| Abstract | CEO characteristics play a central role in shaping firm innovation and firm performance. However, empirical evidence from emerging countries remains limited. This research explores the mediating effect of firm innovation on the linkage between CEO characteristics and firm performance in technology firms in Viet Nam. The CEO attributes considered include age, gender, educational qualifications, founder status, tenure, duality, and overconfidence. A conceptual model comprising ten hypotheses was developed to assess the direct and mediating effects of firm innovation, using data from 477 Vietnamese technology firms analyzed with structural equation modelling (SEM) in AMOS. The results indicate that CEO educational qualification, duality status, and overconfidence have significant relationships with firm innovation. Furthermore, firm innovation positively influences firm performance, as assessed by return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE). More importantly, firm innovation serves as a mediator between several CEO characteristics and firm performance. This study provides theoretical contributions by clarifying the role of firm innovation as a mediator and practical contributions for improving firm performance through CEO characteristics. |
