AbstractBottom muds from the Chao Phya River estuary and klongs in Bangkok were sampled and analyzed. Some factors which affect the rate of oxygen demand of bottom muds, such as depth and surface area of mud, chloride concentration in the overlying water, light intensity, and the rate of flow of water over the bottom mud were studied in the laboratory. Parallel studies were carried out to obtain comparative data on the oxygen demand of muds from many klongs in Bangkok under both laboratory and in-situ conditions. The results of tests to determine the effects of depth and surface area indicated that the rate of oxygen demand of most bottom muds was significantly affected by exposed surface area but generally not by depth of mud. However, as maple with very high organic content from one klong showed some effect of depth on oxygen demand. Gas production occurred under laboratory conditions when they were suitable for anaerobic digestion. Muds with high volatile solids contents gave most gas production. A comparison of the rate of oxygen demand under in-situ and laboratory conditions revealed that in-situ oxygen demands were much higher, by about four times, than laboratory values
