AbstractThe size, forest cover, geologic characteristics and annual rainfall of the adjacent Petchburi and Pranburi basins are considered to be almost the same according to available data. In spite of all the similarity, the Petchburi River produces approximately twice the annual runoff of Pranburi River based on the discharge observations. In this research an attempt was made to evaluate the potential insolation on the two basins and see whether the difference in annual runoff could be due to the difference in solar radiation. In evaluating solar radiation available to the basins, necessary theoretical basis was developed and a technique of obtaining a statistical regression plane which will receive the same amount of solar radiation as that will be received by the actual basin was employed. A method of converting an inclined regression plane to an equivalent horizontal plane was also utilized to further simplify insolation computations. The results of analysis show that the difference in insolation on the two basins does cause a difference in the water loss. However, due to the small slope and approximate eastern aspect of both catchment areas the difference in insolation, and therefore the difference in water loss, is not great enough to explain the large difference in the measured runoff. As the runoff is a complicated function of precipitation, evapotranspiration, deep percolation and many other factors, other reasons must exist for the large difference in runoff. Some suggestions which are considered to be helpful for further study are given.
