An experimental investigation of the structural behaviour of full-scale pseudo-slab concrete bridge decks

AbstractMulti-beam bridge systems consisting of precast pretensioned hollow concrete beams laid side by side are being used increasingly in road bridge construction in Thailand at the present time. The individual beams are connected at their top corners with in-situ concrete shear keys and a limited number of welded steel dowels. Very little is known about the load distribution properties of this type of bridge deck construction and conservative methods of design must therefore be adopted. An investigation of the structural behaviour of two full-scale multi-beam bridges situated on the new Bangkok-Saraburi road is described. Both bridges are 10 m wide and have spans of 6 m and 10 m. Deflections of the underside of the bridge beams were measured at four transverse sections with the test vehicle in two different transverse positions near midspan. Comparisons are made between the observed and theoretically predicted transverse deflection profiles. Considerable load distribution is found to occur. An analysis of the measured deflections shows that the sidewalk-parapet beams provide considerable edge-stiffening to the edge bridge beams. This reduces the critical design moment, in the beams adjacent to the centerline of the bridge, by about 10%. Tentative recommendations are made regarding the design loads for individual bridge beams, where AASHO loading is being used, in this type of bridge structure.
