| Abstract | Orthotropic steel bridge deck construction is a fairly recent development which has been utilized successfully in Europe as well as in America, and has led to very considerable savings in steel quantities. To ascertain the economic feasibility of this technique for use in Pakistan,
two alternate designs of a highway bridge- the first of conventional type and the second employing an orthotropic deck- are prepared and their
costs analyzed. The bridge upon which the study is based has a span of 400 ft, simple end supports and trussed main members. AASHO
specifications for highway bridges with H20- S16 loading are used and the orthotropic deck design follows the procedures formulated in the
Manual for Orthotropic Steel Plate Deck Bridges of the American Institute of Steel Construction. The cost analysis, based on the current wage and
price structure in Pakistan, accounts for purchase, operation and depreciation of a plant for the manufacture of orthotropic bridge decks. The economic feasibility of orthotropic deck construction in Pakistan is
established by the conclusion that, for spans of the type investigated, savings in steel weight of about 34% and in total construction of at least 17% can be realized. Since the possibilities of using this technique advantageously also for shorter spans appear promising, further studies
to determine the boundaries of economic advantage are recommended |
