AbstractThis study seeks to evolve a series of efficient and economical standard designs for reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges with a span range from 20 to 120 ft and to subject these to a detailed comparative cost analysis. The effort centers entirely on the bridge super-structures and no attempt is made to deal with substructures and foundations. All bridges are designed for class AA tracked and wheeled vehicles loading of the Indian Road Congress specifications. Details of pertinent loading, design stresses and roadway dimensions are given in Appendix A. The maximum moment analysis follows Morice\'s load distribution theory. A summary of analytical data and design results is presented in tabular form. Materials quantities and estimated costs are also tabulated. Cost versus span curves are drawn for the reinforced and prestressed concrete designs to determine the boundaries of economic advantage. Based on these, recommendations for optimum solutions are made. Two samples of detailed design computations, one for a reinforced concrete and one for a prestressed concrete span, are given in Appendices B and C, respectively, to illustrate the design procedures employed. It is hoped that the informations presented in this study will aid in the development of economical and efficient standard designs in Pakistan.
