AbstractThe study is concerned with the effect of pavement edge markings on the characteristics of vehicle operation on two-lane curved roadways. Four curves of different radii along Phaholyothin Highway from Rangsit to Saraburi were selected as study sites. The lateral placement of vehicles was observed when the pavement edges were not marked, as well as when they were marked with non-reflective white paint. Observations were made both during daytime and night-time. The lateral position of vehicles was recorded by a camera which was actuated when a selected vehicle ran over a tape switch. Statistical comparisons were utilized to determine whether the transverse position of vehicles is affected substantially by the presence of non-reflective pavement edge markings on highway curves.
