AbstractThe research comprised a study of passenger movements on the State Railway of Thailand. Two types of gravity model were utilized to study passenger interchanges between changwats using each changwat as the origin. Attempts were also made to fit the two types of gravity model to the data of the Northern, Southern, Northeastern, and Eastern lines separately. Selected demographic, economic, and sociologic factors were employed in the models; distance and travel time were used for the impedance factor. The method of least squares was used in determining the parameters of the gravity model and correlation coefficients resulting from the data. Values of the correlation coefficient were used as a criterion for determining which demographic, economic, and sociologic factors resulted in the best model. It is believed that the best results are suitable for forecasting railway passenger traffic
