| Abstract | This research was directed towards investigation of correlative measures of legibility for Urdu-character highway destination signs. An effort was made to study the effect of variations in the several
dimensional characteristics of Urdu legends on their maximum
legibility distance. On the basis of the geometric relationships
between distance seen, and dimensions and area of legend; the maximum legibility distance per letter height, maximum legibility distance per legend height, and maximum legibility distance per legend area were calculated. Simple and multiple linear regression analyses were made the basis for calculating the coefficients of correlation; these and the coefficients of variation were compared to select the most appropriate unit for measurement of legibility.
With but slight modifications, the procedure for data collection
and the experimental set-up were the same as employed previously at the Institute for research on Thai-character highway signs. Glance legibility tests (0.5 sec exposure) and dynamic legibility test (angular rate of 100/sec) were carried out using a set of 150 slides of varying sizes of test signs under simulated driving conditions. The legend on each of the 30 signboards was a single
place-name from West Pakistan written in conformity with the
standard form of "Nastaleeq" Urdu caligraphy in printer’s terminology, the type font and point size were identical for all legends. Results of the research indicated the effect of measurable characteristics of legends on legibility distance and the most effective unit for measurement of legibility. |
