AbstractA two dimensional study was made of the flow conditions produced by the pumping of water from a fresh water aquifer. The aquifer was bounded on its lower surface by a stationary fluid of higher density (salt water) and bounded on its upper surface by a horizontal plane having a constant piezometric head. The withdrawal of the fresh water was produced by continuous pumping from a series of line sinks or drains spaced at periodic intervals in the fresh water region. The pumping produced upcoming of the interface in the vicinity of the line sink. A general rising of the level of the freshwater-saltwater boundary resulted when compared to conditions which existed in the absence of pumping. The results of the mathematical analysis describing the flow conditions is presented graphically in dimensionless form.
