AbstractAn experimental investigation of yield criteria was conducted using twenty-one rectangular, orthotropically reinforced slab models. The slabs were simply supported on their shorter edges and subjected to bending by uniformly distributed loads. The variables under study included the amount of reinforcement in the more heavily reinforced direction, the coefficient of orthotropy (p) and the inclination angle (a) of the heavy reinforcement to the free edges. The results obtained were compared with the theoretical values computed by Johansen’s yield criterion and Kwiencinski’s proposed criterion (full kinking case) and conclusions were drawn. Johansen’s yield criterion was found to be rather conservative in calculating the normal yield moment on the inclined fracture lines, and Kwiencinski’s proposed criterion (full kinking case) gave values which were higher than those obtained from experiments
