AbstractThe construction of any dam across a river changes the position of the bed and water levels downstream of the dam. This investigation was concentrated on a study of the changes in the river bed that occurs downstream of the dam when the normal sediment supply was stopped. Experimental investigation was conducted in a recirculating rectangular flume. The flume was 72 ft long, 2 ft wide and 2% ft deep. The sand bed layer was 8 inches high. Bed materials were almost uniform size having a medium diameter of 0.42 mm and a standard deviation of 1.27 when the equilibrium condition was established recirculating pipe was closed gradually and the clear water was supplied from a different source. Experiment was continued for 68.5 hours with a constant dis¬ charge of 1.11 cfs. The bed and water surface elevations and sediment discharge were measured at various time intervals. Analytical solution was done using Tinny’s theory, with some modifications of his method of analysis, the result of the bed degradation obtained by computation agree reasonably well with the measured data, except near the dam where the observed degradation was more than the computed one with a maximum difference of 35%. Critical shear stress t , sediment characteristic and roughness coefficient n were also determined from the laboratory data
