| Abstract | This paper presents a study of a beam-to-column moment connection using structural steel inserts as a device to transfer shear. Seven specimens were tested to failure. The specimens consisted of two beams connected as simple cantilevers to opposite faces of the column to simulate the negative moment existing at the support of
continuous spans. A concentrated load was applied near the free end of the cantilever beam by means of a hydraulic jack. Computed and experimentally obtained ultimate strength as well as deflection characteristics of the specimens are compared and discussed. The performance of this type of connection in actual building frames is predicted by using a semi-rigid connection theory
developed by the Steel Structures Research Committee and research workers at the Lehigh University, and reviewed by McGuire (Ref. 12). |
