AbstractPure organic substrates were used to investigate the applicability of the large volume respirometer for treatability studies on industrial wastes. The kinetics of biological oxidation of glucose, glutamic acid, and a 1:1 mixture of the two were determined at 30°C to study the effects of high temperature on aerobic treatment. Wastes from the production of tapioca starch and from Pepsi Cola bottling company were sampled and used to study their quality characteristics and biodegradability. Activated sludges acclimatized to different conditions of pH and nutrient supplementation were developed in batch-fed activated sludge units and used in the large volume respirometer to find the effect of different operating conditions on waste treatability. Biochemical reaction rate constants for the two industrial wastes were assessed using the large volume respirometer at 30°C for use in process design in Southeast Asian countries. The results obtained confirmed the suitability of the large volume respirometer for treatability studies. Batch-fed activated sludge studies indicated that Pepsi Cola waste was easily biodegradable and respirometric studies showed that no phosphorus supplementation or pH adjustment were required for treatment. The waste was deficient in nitrogen and its supplementation is recommended for efficient biological treatment. Aerobic biological treatment of settled tapioca starch waste was found to be feasible with optimum conditions when-nitrogen and phosphorus were added and pH was adjusted to 6.5. Kinetic studies on biological treatment of the two wastes gave rate constants which were comparable with those reported for readily-degradable wastes.
