AbstractThe influence of four different local aggregates on creep and compressive strength of concrete was investigated using a fixed water-cement ratio. Creep specimens were 4 in. diameter and 12 in long, and compressive strengths of standard cylinders were determined at 28 days age. Concrete deformations were measured by using an 8-in. demountable mechanical strain gage. Two sustained loading systems, the hydraulic and spring loading systems, were described in details. The loads had been sustained for an interval of 30 and 40 days. Test results revealed that both creep and compressive strength were considerably affected by the properties of coarse aggregate, and that it is possible for concrete to have high compressive strength and yet show a low modulus of elasticity. This phenomenon was caused by the compressibility, the absorption capacity, and bond strength between matrix and surface of aggregate.
