| Abstract | Sixteen rectangular simply supported beams were tested. Three 6 x 10 in., 7 ft. long beams without web reinforcement under two point loading were tested as a preliminary study. Thirteen 8 x 10 in., 8 ft. long with bent-up bars and other forms of shear reinforcement were tested under point loads and arrangements were made to obtain directly the relative efficiency of various types of shear reinforcement. The shear strength of the beams was predicted by LAUPA’s equation and the ACI-ASCE Committee 326 equation. The test results
indicate no significant difference between the effectiveness of bent up bars and stirrups on the basis of the above equations. The ACI ASCE equation was found to be more conservative than LAUPA’s equation. The results show that within the range of the investigation,
the ultimate shear strength of the beam is at least 507. greater than the theoretical value by the ACI equation. |
