| Abstract | The Chao Phraya Plain is underlain by a thick sequence of Tertiary to Quaternary elastic deposits. The surface stratum of this sequence consists of a soft highly plastic marine clay that poses severe problems to the geo technical engineering profession, while the underlying strata constitute a series of some eight confined aquifers which yield abundant ground water. In this report, the geology is described in the light of new information available from petroleum exploration in the Gulf of Thailand, and the important geotechnical properties, particularly those of the marine clay, are briefly reviewed. The major geotechnical engineering problems that are encountered include flood problems related to the low elevation of the Plain, stability and settlement of structures associated with construction on or in the soft marine clay, and ground water problems caused by the excessive extraction of water from the deep aquifers beneath the Plain. The problems related to over pumping of groundwater include depletion of shallow aquifers, salt water encroachment, and general ground subsidence as a result of declines in piezometric pressures. |
