AbstractThe Essa refinery in Singapore uses a facultative pond to treat its phenolic wastewater. This system is highly sensitive to shock loading. In order to protect the pond against sudden increases in influent phenol which could occur in spite of close in-plant controls, a device is required which can reduce the magnitude of such increases and, preferably, also complement the pond in degrading the phenol. The trickling filter was chosen as a possibility for this purpose, the choice being based on capital cost, operating and maintenance cost, and shock absorbing capability. The pilot plant study utilized corrugated PVC sheets as the filter medium. The study examined the effects of shock loads of up to 500% additional phenol. The results of the study indicated that a trickling filter would provide good protection for the oxidation pond as well as assist in the degradation of the phenol. The filter would adequately handle almost all the shock loading situations that current experience shows could happen. The necessary size of filter to provide a satisfactory performance is indicated as about 60 m2 .in area,
