| Abstract | To comprehend t he growth patterns of goods traffic on Pakistan Railways in its broad perspective, role of transportation in developing
economies is introduced as a background for this study. The relevant literature on the subject was reviewed and important rationales included in the report. The problems associated with, and causes of, existing declines in railway freight traffic in the country are then analyzed in
details. Past performance in the field, has been interpreted on the
basis of the indices customarily used on the railways. Need for planning and consequently forecasting is thus established. Forecasting of goods traffic is accomplished by Least Square Technique, as well as by the
System Dynamics Computer Model. Forecasts obtained by the two methods are compared, limitations realized, and recommendations considered
useful are given. |
