| Abstract | In this study the traditional techniques and network techniques for project management are featured in some details. The traditional techniques (Gantt Chart, Milestone Method, Line of
balance) have many limitations which can be overcome by the application of network techniques (e.g. CPM, PERT, GERT). The models of these techniques can be represented by two system; Activity on Arrow and Activity on Node
(precedence diagram). The first development of CPM and PERT based on Activity on Arrow system which permits much less computer storage than
Activity on Node system but it requires complied dummies while the other does not.
CPM(Critical Path Method} is deterministic motel; it is mostly
used in construction industry. PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique) is a probabilistic one used mainly in research & development
project. The two models were developed independently but in actual practice some of their differences have disappeared or at least become less important. The further development of CPM and PERT is called GERT
(Graphical Evaluation and Review Technique) which is a stochastic network. It is a powerful technique that can overcome the limitations of CPM
and PERT. |
