| Abstract | Vibrations of a long machine foundation are studied. The excitation force caused by the unbalanced mass of the machine is frequency dependent. The medium supporting the foundation is assumed to be isotropic and elastic. The problem involves three modes of vibrations, vertical and coupled horizontal and rocking motions. The response curves for the vertical motion contain one resonant peak, while two resonant peaks exist in the coupled horizontal and rocking motion. The foundation behavior depends heavily upon the operating frequency, foundation mass and dimensions. The Poisson's ratio of the medium has less influence. The results are presented in the form of charts to facilitate the analysis and design of such structures. |
