| Abstract | This paper attempts to provide a better understanding of the behavior of semi-rigid steel frames. The joint rigidity is varied from that of a hinge to that of a fully rigid joint. Frame stability and mechanism resistance of frames are the limiting conditions studied. The frame is
assumed to be laterally braced in the direction perpendicular to the plane of loading. It is assumed that failure occurs by bending in the plane of the applied moment. In analyzing frame stability, the effect of thrust in the columns, yielding in the beam, and residual stress in the members are included. The limiting moment resistance of double web angle connections
and seat and clip angle connections is developed as a function of connection stiffness. The frames considered are acted upon by a symmetrical load on the beam and additional equal concentrated loads on each column. The loading parameter which relates the magnitude of the concentrated loads on the columns to the intensity of load acting on the beam is kept constant at a value of 2. Two cases of pinned-base portal frames are investigated:
(1) Frames prevented from swaying sideward.
(2) Frames permitted to sway. |
