| Abstract | Experimental investigations of the concentric and eccentric shearing resistance of fillet welded connections are reported herein. Twelve longitudinal and six transverse fillet welds were tested under concentric load
to make a critical evaluation of the increase in the allowable stress for fillet welds in the current AISC Specification. The shortcomings of the
conventional design method for eccentrically loaded welded connections were
studied by means of eighteen steel brackets tested under eccentric load.
The weld groups studied were two-sided welds, C-shaped welds and completely
closed welds. The angle of rotation and center of rotation of the connections were measured. All tests were performed to failure. The observed values in both investigations were compared to the corresponding theoretical values. Based on the test results, pertinent conclusions were drawn and recommendations for proportioning eccentrically
loaded welded connections were developed. |
