AbstractThe influence of a water reducing admixture on properties of concrete was investigated. These properties were workability, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, creep, shrinkage and permeability. The test consisted of two series. The first series investigated the direct effect of the admixture on mixes whose water cement ratio and other proportions were kept constant. For the second series, the general effect was investigated on mixes with constant workability. The direct effect is caused by chemical adsorption between the admixture and the phases of concrete. This adsorption will produce concrete with better quality. The general effect is the combination of direct effect and the result of the reduction in water requirement to control workability. The results revealed that addition of the admixture will affect the above mentioned properties of concrete. The main effects are increase in strength and the reduction in improvements of the other properties.
