AbstractTwo related investigations were made of two-dimensional flow phenomena. One was the study of a reclamation technique by which salt water intrusion was controlled in a coastal region while the other study involved the single phase flow through a contracted section. The solution to the problem of flow through the contracted section was a direct result of solving the saltwater intrusion problem. Fresh water was supplied above the aquifer and produced a fresh water wedge which displaced the saline water in the originally salt water saturated porous media. By pumping fresh water from the wells which were spaced at periodic intervals in the fresh water region, upconing of the fresh-salt water interface was produced in the vicinity of the wells. A general rising of the level of the interface was also obtained. The relationships were investigated between the geometry of the steady state position of the fresh water wedge and the pumping rate, well geometry, properties of the media and the positions of the fresh water and salt water heads. Theoretical equations expressing these relationships were presented graphically in dimensionless form. An almost identical mathematical analysis was used to study two cases of single phase flow through a contracted section. The flow was produced between two lines of constant head across the contraction. The theoretical solutions were presented graphically in dimensionless form. As a check on the theory, several electric analog model experiments were conducted. Results showed an excellent agreement with the theoretically obtained values.
