| Abstract | The objective of this study has been to investigate the role
of the Korat-Nong Khai Highway in the economic development of the region in which it is located. Changwads transversed by the highway are Korat, Khon Kaen, Udorn, and Nong Khai. Studies of traffic were made to explore the patterns of transportation as an aid to understanding the usage of this development road. The major studies dealt with economic benefits, mainly indirect benefits. Indirect
benefits are derived from agricultural development, forest product development, the development of business and commercial activity, and the development of road transport in the study area. Time series changes in agricultural production, forest production, business activity, and road transport in the Korat-Nong
Khai Highway area were compared to data for a datum area. The datum area, which was considered not to be influenced by the highway,
was selected as Changwads Burirum and Surin. The Korat-Nong Khai Highway did not seem generally to effect agricultural production;
however, it was believed to result in an increase in the production of kenaf. The highway seems to have caused an Increase in the number of businesses in the towns traversed by it, and to have
increased road transport activity in the Northeast. |
