AbstractOne of the potential procedures for processing algae after removal from the high rate oxidation pond is sun drying of the algal paste, In preference to methods involving costly energy requirements for algal drying, solar radiation was studied as a feasible alternative source through open air flat bed sun drying. This research was directed towards establishing design and operating criteria for algal paste drying. Weighable drying pans were used to observe removal of water from algal paste under varying drying conditions. The more important variables considered were algal paste concentration, algal paste depth, solar radiation and colour of the drying pan ourface. Design criteria were developed in terms of feasible loading rates (gm/ m-d)for each condition studied. Optimum drying parameters for subtropical conditions were established as depth, 0.5 cm; initial solids concentration, 7%; and solar radiation, 480 cal/cm-day on a black surface. Under these conditions mass loading rates were observed in the2 vicinity of 350 gm/m-d. The algal paste being dried in approximately 7 hours to a solids concentration of 95%.
