| Abstract | As a part of the mass algal culture research program sponsored, by the Asian Institute of Technology, the Applied. Scientific Research Corporation of Thailand, and the Canadian International Development
Agency, research into the use of the high rate oxidation pond system as providing a source of water and protein to the urban environment has been undertaken. It is envisaged that the vary large and high density
cities of Asia will benefit from nitrogen and water recycling. To date, the algal culture process presents one of the most feasible techniques of accomplishing this task. This study reveals feasible methods of pond use providing benefits in terms of materials recovery and waste treatment. An urban model was
developed to incorporate this waste treatment-food producing technique which provided a 2/3 reduction of urban water supply requirements. A dual distribution system was suggested, the reclaimed water being piped
back to the community largely for cleansing, drinking water being transported by truck to the household. An example high rate oxidation pond was designed and costs of algal production and water reclamation estimated. A preliminary input
price sensitivity analysis was performed which emphasized the strong influence, of such factors as harvesting costs, land costs and appreciation rates.
A review of the literature revealed the applicability of the use of sewage-grown algae as a supplemental dietary protein source in the feeding of swine, cattle, sheep and chicken. |
