AbstractAn inlet pipe with a flared entrance will experience a force in the opposite direction of flow due to the decreased pressure on the convex face where velocities are high. This force is increased when the velocities are amplified by constricting the flow between the entrance and a wall, or a velocity cap in the case of a vertical inlet. To separate the entrance pipe and wall from the remainder of the flow system, for the purpose of measuring of force on it, discharge was effected by a jet located at the entrance. Velocities were measured by pitot tube and force by pressure take-offs around the flared entrance, besides total force on the inlet and wall by a force-transducer meter. Guide vanes between the entrance and the wall permitted various degrees of vorticity in the flow. Conditions for the force being optimized were examined. The theoretical value for the force from the momentum equation agreed with the experimental values for radial flow.
