AbstractAn experimental investigation was carried out to study the effect of soil structure on dilatation of clay during shear. Samples of soft Bangkok clay were sedimented in the laboratory. Flocculated and dispersed soil structures were produced by sedimentation in solutions of sodium chloride and sodium hexametaphosphate respectively. In addition, the flocculated samples were leached with distilled water to achieve various final salt concentrations. Triaxial consolidated undrained tests with pore pressure measurement were employed to study the tendency of soil to dilate during shear. The test results showed that at any particular value of overconsolidation ratio the flocculated soil exhibited a greater tendency to dilate during shear than the dispersed soil did, In the flocculated soil, the tendency to dilate decreased with an increasing amount of leaching and the unleached flocculated soil exhibited the greatest tendency to dilate. When the OCR was equal to 24 and 1, the tendency for dilatation was nearly the same for all soils. Bjerrum’s concept of diagenetic bonds and recoverable strain energy was found satisfactory to explain the observed results. Based on that concept, a mechanism of dilatation in overconsolidated soils was proposed.
