AbstractFive pile groups each consisting of four timber piles of a size of 15 cm diameter and 6 m long, driven in Bangkok Clay at different pile spacings of 2, 2.5, 3, 4 and 5 times of the piles diameter were subjected to load-test. Five isolated single piles were also tested at the same time as the pile groups for determining the group efficiencies and settlement ratios. Efficiencies of the investigated pile groups were found to increase with increasing pile spacing and exceed 1.0 for every group. The settlement of the pile groups under any fraction of failure load decreases as the pile spacing increased. In calculating the bearing capacity of piles, skin friction constant (a) of 0.60 and 0.75 were introduced for the shear strength results based on field vane shear tests and unconfined compression tests respectively
