AbstractCharacteristics of laminar and turbulent flow of air through porous media were studied. The flow characteristics were investigated as a non-dimensional relationships between friction factor and Reynolds number. An expression of the hydraulic radius of a porous medium was developed to be used as the characteristic length of the pore spaces of the medium in defining the friction factor and Reynolds number. The expression of the hydraulic radius was derived in term of the pertaining physical properties of the porous medium viz: porosity, permeability, tortuosity, shape factor of the flow channel and coefficient of variance of the pore-size distribution. The derivation was made using the concept of the flow through pipes of non-circular cross-section. An empirical equation relating friction factor and Reynolds number for laminar and turbulent flow of compressible and incompressible fluid in porous media was obtained using Darcy’s law and experimental results.
