AbstractThis report presents findings of field and laboratory investigations on the undrained shear strength of soft Bangkok clay. Undisturbed samples were taken from the depths of 7 ft to 25 ft below ground surface at the new campus of the Asian Institute of Technology at Rangsit, 42 kilometers north of Bangkok. GEONOR vane borer was used to determine the in-situ undrained shear strength in the field near boreholes, from which samples were taken for laboratory investigation. A 55 x 110 mm vane blade was used and the rotation rate was 0.1 deg per sec. Laboratory investigation includes the laboratory vane shear, unconfined compression and unconsolidated-undrained triaxial tests. Laboratory vane tests employed the standard vane of in. by % in. dimension, while the unconfined com¬ pression test and the unconsolidated-undrained triaxial test without pore pressure measurement were run on 1.4 in. diameter and 2.8 in. height undisturbed samples were sheared at a constant rate of strain, 1 per cent per min. Results of the investigations revealed that the laboratory vane shear gave the highest strength to be followed in order by field vane shear and unconfined compression tests. The triaxial (UU) tests yielded results which were about equal to the unconfined compression tests. The sampling disturbance by the current sampling practices was cited as a major factor contributing to strength discrepancy. The degree of disturbance was checked in the UU test and appeared to be 50 per cent.
