A comparison between oedometer and stress path methods for settlement analysis under undrained loading conditions

AbstractAn attempt was made to investigate and compare the settlements of subsoils under a test embankment predicted from various available techniques in both the testing methods and analyses. The testing methods consisted of the stress path tests and the oedometer tests. Field observations were made and compared with the predicted values based on laboratory test data. The test embankment was constructed at the new AIT site in Rangsit. Undisturbed soil samples from the weathered and soft zones were taken from the site for laboratory investigations. In the laboratory tests using standard oedometers, conventional tests were employed, whereas in the stress path tests, simulation of actual field loading conditions, i.e. undrained, were endeavored and the same loading as in the stress path tests were performed in the hydraulic oedometer tests. No trend could be established regarding the differences between the standard oedometer and the hydraulic oedometer due to too few number of tests. The calculated immediate settlements from the stress path tests and the elastic theory were both greater than the observed ones. The total settlements based on primary consolidation showed fairly close agreement between the stress path method and the Terzaghi’s method. The Skempton’Bjerrum's method yielded a somewhat higher results. The stress path method was anticipated to give a higher value and the errors caused by filter paper drain used in the test was accounted for the lower values of settlement obtained. Bjerrum's concept of delayed consolidation was used to predict the settlement which would occur in the distant future time, the period of which was the same as the age of the deposit and the results gave a very high value. The calculated rate of settlement from oedometer tests based on average cv was much slower than the observed ones. No conclusion could be established at this time from the results of the field and laboratory tests due to the rather short time scale involved.
