AbstractThe effects of different loading conditions on the pore pressure development, the rate of pore pressure dissipation and the deformation characteristics of Soft Bangkok Clay were studied during one-dimensional consolidation. It was found that the rate of pore pressure dissipation was a function of load increment duration as well as load increment ratio. The rates of primary and secondary compression were closely related to the rate of pore pressure dissipation. A comparison is presented of predicted and measured values of pore pressure; considerable deviations exist from the pore pressures predicted by Terzaghi’s theory, the observed rates of pore pressure dissipation being reasonably close to Terzaghi’s theoretical values only for large load increment ratios. The theory of DAVIS and RAYMOND (1965) does not predict the pore pressures well under almost any conditions. An attempt is made to evaluate the coefficient of primary consolidation from pore pressure dissipation; this is found to be a useful technique where a Type III compression curve is obtained.
