| Abstract | The permeability of Bangkok Clay was determined in the
field from the ground surface to a depth of 4.5 m, using the
auger-hole method, and in the laboratory, to a depth of 10.0 m,
using a constant head permeameter. It was found that the permeability decreased with depth and this was reflected in
the decreasing void ratio. The horizontal permeability was
higher than the vertical and remolded permeabilities at all
depths. The remolded permeability was lower than the vertical one in the Weathered Clay but higher than that in the Soft and Stiff Clays. The permeability of the Weathered Clay was found from laboratory tests to be in the region of 10¯ ⁵ cm/sec but, because of the many fissures and root holes that exist, the field permeability was measured as 10¯ ⁴ cm/sec. This compared with permeabilities, determined in the laboratory, for the Soft and Stiff Clays in the range 10¯⁹ to 10¯⁸ cm/sec. Distinct changes in the permeability values occurred at the boundaries between the Weathered, Soft and Stiff Clays.

from previous consolidation test data were of the order of
10¯⁷ cm/sec. |
