Demand for potable water in small communities of Thailand

AbstractWater demand in 14 small communities in Thailand was studied to determine the need for potable water and to delineate the factors affecting water demand. The communities were chosen because of their different characteristics and existing water systems. Several factors were taken into account, these being hours of availability of water through the distribution system, type of water service connection, price of water, season of the year, water quality, and socio-economic status of the community. Average daily water demand over the study period for 13 communities showed a range from 9.6 to 87.4 liters per capita per day (Ipcd). For public fountains, water demand ranged from 9.6 to 36.8 Ipcd; for unmetered house connections the range was from 21.0 to 87.4 Ipcd, and for metered house connections, from 24.4 to 65.2 Ipcd. One village with unmetered house connections and free water showed average daily water demand ranging from 115.6 to 158.9 Ipcd. Factors which showed significant influence on the demand for water were hours of availability of water through the distribution system, type of water service connection, price of water, and season of the year. The measures defining water quality and socio-economic status were not sufficient to draw conclusions about the effect of these factors on the demand for water.
