Effects of back pressure on strength behavior of Bangkok clay

AbstractIn this investigation, 16 consolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests with pore pressure measurement were carried out on 1,4 in. diameter undisturbed samples of Soft Bangkok Clay from depths of 17 to 20 ft. All the samples were sheared under normally consolidated conditions. The four magnitudes of back pressure of zero, 7.5, 40 and 100 Ib/sq in, were employed as being representative, respectively, of a common commercial test situation, the approximate in situ neutral pressure a pressure that ensures sample saturation, and a back pressure much in excess of that required for saturation The results indicate that at high consolidation pressures the undrained shear strength is unaffected by magnitude of back pressure. At the low consolidation pressure of 10 Ib/sq in, however, the undrained strength of the samples subjected to the lower back pressures of zero and 7.5 lb sq in. are higher than those subjected to the higher back pressure of 40 and 100 Ib/sq. in. The samples subjected to the lower back pressure and the lower consolidation pressure of 10 Ib/sq.-in. show evidence of apparent over consolidation and lower values of the parameter A at failure. The total and effective strength envelopes, for samples tested at the higher back pressure show no cohesion intercept, while samples tested under the lower back pressure show an appreciable cohesion intercept in the over consolidated portion.
