AbstractOne-dimensional consolidation tests with pore pressure measurement were carried out in the ANTEUS consolidometer in order to investigate the effects of applied back pressure on the consolidation behavior of undisturbed Bangkok Soft Clay from a depth of 18 ft at Rangsit. Four different back pressures of magnitude 0, 5, 40 and 70 lb/in4 were applied to the soil specimens which were loaded with load increment ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0,and load increment durations of 1, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours. The application of back pressure dissolves any air bubbles in the pore water of soil specimens to duplicate the ir-situ saturation conditions. Where the back pressure was not sufficiently high in this investigation to cause complete saturation of the samples, the rate of consolidation and the development of hydrostatic excess pressure under load were Significantly different from those where a high enough back pressure was employed to cause saturation. The magnitude of the soil compressibility, however, was not affected by back pressure and the coefficient of consolidation was affected only where the loading pressure was below the preconsolidation pressure.
