AbstractIn this research, the applicability of acceleration noise as a measure of quality of traffic service on arterial streets was investigated. An investigation was made to evaluate the "energy-momentum" concept as a measure for relating the levels of service to the traffic flow variables: flow, speed, density, and acceleration noise, on arterial streets in Bangkok. The traffic flow data was gathered by the maximum, average, and minimum car techniques developed by the Road Research Laboratory, England, whilst the acceleration data was obtained in the form of a continuous curve from a recorder activated by an accelerometer. It was found that although acceleration noise was sensitive to the smoothness of flow, it is not a very practical measure for determining the level of service. It was also inferred that, based on the limited data, the "energy-momentum" concept was not precisely applicable to the interrupted flow conditions on arterials in Bangkok, but there was a certain degree of conformity between the data and the models formulated from the concept.
