| Abstract | The subject of this research was on the investigation of the effects of leaching on properties of a recently deltaic clay.
Artificial specimens of the clay were prepared in the labora¬
tory starting from sedimentation in salt water. Specimens were
leached with fresh water flow under a constant hydraulic
gradient. Shear strength of the specimens were determined with
a laboratory vane shear apparatus. The two primary variables investigated were salt concentration and consolidation pressure. There was no tendency for the index properties to change after leaching and the water content remained practically constant. Due to leaching, undisturbed shear strength decreased by 35 per
cent whereas the remolded shear strength suffered a loss of
about 60 per cent. The sensitivity of the clay samples
increased and changed the soil from a slightly sensitive to a
very sensitive one. |
