AbstractA test embankment was constructed under controlled loading conditions on a deposit of coastal marine clay near Bangkok. The settlement of the embankment was analyzed by the Conventional Method, the Skempton-Bjerrum's Method and the Stress Path Method. The results showed that the amount of settlement predicted by the three methods was nearly the same. When compared with the field data, the predicted rate of settlement deviated significantly from the field results. No conclusion could be made on the accuracy of the predicted ultimate settlement because of the unsatisfactory field pore pressure data. Preliminary investigations showed that both the use of drained paper and the duration time of Kq consolidation affect the results of the Stress Path tests. While the effect of the latter was not very significant, the error due to the former was quite important. Limited data also showed that the rate of secondary compression was not affected by the length of drainage path.
