AbstractThe effects of salt content on the properties of a compacted clay were studied. The properties under investigation included plasticity, compaction characteristics, compressive strength and thixotropy. The clay was taken from a pit in the Bangkok area and was air dried before being compacted. Sodium chloride was used as the added salt. Specimens were tested in unconfined compression for the purpose of investigation of the compressive strength and thixotropy. The application of double layer theory does not provide the best explanation for the behavior of compacted clay under the influence of additional salt. On the other hand, the short range interparticle forces that have not been considered in the double layer theory seems to have more influence on the soil behavior than the long range interparticle forces. Increase in salt content resulted in (1) reduction in the liquid limit and the plastic limit, (2) reduction in the compressive strengths when compacted on the wet side of optimum and (3) increase in dry density on the dry side of optimum. The effects of salt content on the thixotropic characteristics provided additional experimental evidences in confirming Mitchell’s hypothesis. The results indicated that the maximum per cent thixotropic strength increase occurred at maximum excess internal energy which was resulted from the shear strains induced by the compaction process. The shear strains were in turn dependent upon the soil structure for which the influence of short range interparticle forces was postulated to be one of the controlling factors. For practical purpose, sodium chloride could not be used as a stabilizing agent for the Bangkok Clay. On the other hand, sea water may be used for compaction without detrimental effects to the strength of the soil.
