Unlocking digital transformation: the role of dynamic capabilities and management innovation in driving firms digital performance

AbstractUnder todays dynamic business environment, digital transformation has become critical to firms strategies to achieve and maintain a competitive advantage. To achieve digital transformation, firms ought to have dynamic capabilities that allow them to detect and react to changes in the digital environment. Relying on the dynamic capability perspective and contingency theory, this research examines the relationship between digital transformation, management innovation, and dynamic capabilities. Specifically, the study examines the moderating effects of management innovation on the influence of dynamic capabilities on firms’ performance of digital transformation. Based on delayed collection of data from multiple sources gathered from 171 firms (342 respondents), the results indicate that dynamic capabilities (sensing capability and integrating capability) positively affect firms’ degree of digital transformation. Moreover, the results show also that management innovation nonlinearly moderates nonlinearly to; i.e., management innovation has a U-shaped moderating effect on sensing capability, and an inverse U-shaped effect on integrating capability, and digital transformation relationship. These findings show that dynamic capabilities could help improve the adoption of digital transformation, and management innovation could enhance their dynamic capabilities, but with a limit.
