| Abstract | Transitioning to regenerative agriculture is crucial for restoring ecosystem health and ensuring long-term food security in Vietnam. However, smallholder farmers, who dominate the sector, face significant challenges due to the high certification costs and the complexity of documentation. Community-based certification offers an alternative to third-party certification. However, their adoption in Vietnam has stagnated. This reveals a paradox between theoretical potential and practical implementation. The research employs a qualitative comparative methodology to analyze two distinct operational models: government-supported Ben Tre PGS network in the Mekong Delta, and the community-oriented Caritas Dalat CFGS network in the Central Highlands. This study integrates an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework with Social Learning Theory (SLT) to examines the mechanisms enabling regenerative transitions in Southern Vietnam. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with farmers, key informant interviews with network coordinators, focus group discussions, group meetings and field observations. By comparing the two networks, the research highlights common patterns as well as specific differences in organizational support, market orientation, and cultural values. These exploratory findings provide initial insights for practitioners and policymakers working with community-based approaches in similar smallholder contexts. However, broader studies are necessary before applying these results to other regions or scales. |
